What is the mentality behind 'yoyo' clubs?

The highs and lows of supporting a football club makes every season an entertaining one. From the pinnacle of gaining promotion, or maybe staying up on the final day of the season, to hitting rock bottom and facing relegation.

In years gone by, we have seen so many teams that have bounced between the Premier League and Championship, commonly referred to as ‘yoyo’ clubs. Norwich, Burnley, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion make up just a few on that list.

Teams who suffer from both extremes in sho

The Mental Game of Fantasy Football: Is it taking over your life?

League tables and virtual statistics rule the game, where success is not determined by the ability of athletes on the field. The intricate strategy and decision-making are what distinguish champions from contenders in the fantasy football world.

Similarly to the actual Premier League, fantasy offers fans a new opportunity each week for points to add up on the scoreboard, where the importance of mentality becomes unmistakably clear.

It’s easy to focus only on stats and strategies. Yet it’s the

How a referee dealt with Paul Gascoigne, Vinnie Jones and a full pitch brawl at ‘The Battle of Old Trafford’.

Keith Hackett was an iconic English referee – taking charge of the 1981 FA Cup final, the European Championships, countless English first division fixtures and even the 1988 Seoul Olympics. As a referee every decision is under fierce scrutiny, and you have to deal with a range of personalities. The likes of Paul Gascoigne, Vinnie Jones and Dennis Wise were three names that Hackett instantly recalled.

“With Gazza, if he was on the bench, he was like a rubber band. Getting wound up with every min

How difficult is playing on a “cold rainy night in Stoke” ?

With the Champions League final kicking off this Saturday all eyes will be on former Stoke striker Joselu, who will be donning the historic white jersey of Real Madrid.

Premier League fans will remember when he joined Stoke City in the summer of 2015 from the Bundesliga and then Newcastle United in 2017, failing to impress at both English sides.

So is it really harder to play on a cold rainy night in Stoke than the Champions League semi-final as the infamous saying suggests?

England choose remote base camp for Euro 2024

Once again, England have chosen to base themselves far from the city buzz as they prepare to tuck themselves away in a rustic German hicksville for Euro 2024. This is not the first time England have opted for a secluded base camp in recent years, and it all but confirms a more considered and holistic FA approach to these things.

Since Gareth Southgate took hold of the reins as England’s manager in 2016, we have seen England adopt a fresh philosophy with regards to the training base selection. T

Positive mindset 'vital' in overcoming injuries says ex-Chelsea talent

Former England youth international Charlie Wakefield said he ‘felt like he’d killed someone in his past life’, after a string of injuries ended his promising career at Chelsea.

Wakefield picked up ten serious hamstring injuries between the ages of 18 and 21, just after he had started training with the first team under Antonio Conte.

Now aged 26, Wakefield has made a documentary on mental health in football, and has emphasised just how important having the correct mindset is when battling injur

Age fraud in African Football

Age fraud in football, especially among young athletes, has long cast a shadow over African football. This practice, where players lie about their age to gain a competitive advantage, distorts competition at youth levels, hinders the development of genuine talent, and trust in the sport. However, beneath the surface of these falsifications lies a deeper, more personal issue: the psychological pressures that drive players to deceive.

The controversy surrounding former Lazio’s Joseph Minala, who

Is it ever okay for fans to want a different team to win?

Recently we’ve seen fans cheering for the opposition to win because it means that their rivals might not have won the league, and once again this weekend offers another interesting opportunity for many fans to get behind a different team. But is that all okay?

Firstly we’re going to come to Tottenham Hotspur fans about this, as last week they had an opportunity to perhaps give a helping hand to their fierce North London rivals, Arsenal.

Spurs were at home as they faced Manchester City in the p

England Euro 2024 squad announced

Gareth Southgate names his initial 30-man England squad which he intends to take to Euro 2024 in Germany, as the tournament starts June 14.

This isn’t the final draft just yet, and there’s still time for some late decisions. As the England manager still has time to pick his final 26-man squad by midnight on June 7, after two friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland.

That will mean that four players from this squad won’t be making it to the Euros so these games are a final chance to pr

Alisson says Jurgen Klopp created a ‘new mentality’ at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s nearly decade long reign at Liverpool came to an end yesterday, with Liverpool beating Wolves 2-0 at Anfield.

Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been a key figure in Liverpool success during that time, winning the Premier League and Champions League since signing for the Reds in 2018.

Speaking after the game, Alisson told LFC how Klopp has changed the mentality of Liverpool.

“He created a new mentality here at the club. It’s about that.

Why Jarrod Bowen leapfrogs Cole Palmer for Euros game time

Our tactics writer Aidan Smith, from Tactically Speaking, suggests Jarrod Bowen may be a more direct replacement for Bukayo Saka in-game than Cole palmer.

In Cole Palmer you’ve got a highly technical winger who doesn’t get phased by pressured moments, and who’s been the most important player at one of England’s biggest clubs. What’s not to like?

Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 will likely accommodate five wingers — since lobbying to increase the squad size from 23 to 26 players

Luton Town's culture will help them back into the Premier League

Relegation has long been looming over the minds of Luton all season, and the loss to Fulham was the final nail in the coffin of their battle to stay in the Premier League.

As they come back down to the Championship there’s much more of a familiarity as they’ve been in this position before, and I’m not talking about the league.

The Hatters have faced relegation numerous times before, and let’s not forget that it was just over one decade ago that they were playing in non-league.

Academy football stars mental struggles

In the complex world of academies, scouts look near to home to discover local young talents in the hope they will bud into their next superstar. Ben Atiako-Hall was one of these prospects, signing to AFC Bournemouth academy at 7 years old.

“When you’re young you don’t realise the significance of it. It was a huge moment for me.”

After being played in various positions on the field, it was on the flanks that Atiako-Hall established himself as a top winger in the academy. The young prodigy impre
